Deuce to Seven Triple Draw

Deuce to Seven Triple Draw is a version of poker that flees the usual hierarchy of winning hands and rewards the pot to the active player holding the lowest qualifying hand at the time of showdown. Like five-card draw, players have a betting round followed by a draw of up to five cards and a second round of betting. Blinds are used in the same way as five-card draw, or antes may be required instead. The order of betting is the same. In fact, Deuce to Seven Draw is to five-card draw what Omaha Lowball is to Omaha. There are a couple of differences, however, between this game and Omaha Lo.

In Deuce to Seven Draw Poker, straights and flushes count in their usual places in the hierarchy of hands. Aces count as high cards. Therefore, the lowest possible hand in this game is Deuce to Seven, with a gap at the 6. That is why the game is named as it is.

The “triple draw” variation adds two additional draw rounds of from zero to five cards, with two more opportunities to bet. Now it should be fairly obvious that with the possibility of having up to 20 cards from which to choose a low hand, most of the hands in play are indeed very low. The same kind of phenomenon occurs as in Omaha, where four pocket cards and five board cards create lots of opportunities to put together a strong hand.

Before a game begins it is good practice to be clear on what the rules are about the draws. A dealer might collect the sloughed cards and reshuffle them with the remaining deck to create a supply that will cover so many draws. Another option is that the players (or the house, through the dealer) may limit the second and/or third draws to three cards. For three players, this will result in a maximum usage of 48 cards. Tie hands split the pot. There is no order of suits for tie-breaking purposes.
