Draw Poker
In modern poker rooms patrons can choose among three main types of poker: draw, stud and hold’em. Some may be high, low or split pot games. The betting systems (limit, pot limit, no limit) and the minimum bets may vary, too. But the first choice will be among draw, stud or hold’em.
Draw poker is the oldest of the three poker types. It still has lots of supporter because the only information at the table concerning the opponent’s cards is the amount of the bet and the number of cards drawn. The rest is up to tells.
Stud poker developed because some players wanted more information about their adversaries’ strength in the form of face-up cards (3, 4, 5 & 6). Then came Texas Hold’Em, in which five of the seven cards are known to all players and shared by them.
Draw poker can be played in a seven-card version, but it is almost always dealt as five-card draw. Home games usually use antes followed by an opening bet by someone with a minimal hand, like “Jacks or better.” Casinos use blind bets, and sometimes antes as well.
Online casinos offer draw poker games, but they are not as popular as the other types because it is virtually impossible to pick up tells from other online players, and tells are an important component in draw games, where no cards are played face up.
