Las Vegas Golf Courses

Though there is no golf course in downtown Las Vegas and only two on the Strip (one of them reserved for hotel guests only), the concierge desk at almost any Las Vegas hotel can book tee times at just about any of the well-known Las Vegas area golf courses. Some courses are owned by the resorts and others have special referral relationships, so the visitor may be encouraged to sign up at a specific course, depending on the place he or she is staying. Still, in principle, a golfer should be able to try out all but one of the thirty-four courses mentioned below. (The Wynn is restricted to guests.) A few are private clubs, but do offer daily fee playing on certain days of the week. The remaining locations are daily fee clubs or municipal courses.

Las Vegas Gold Courses

Advice applicable to all courses.

Call to make a tee time. Call early. If the plan is to have a weekend outing or a round during high season, call ahead, even before traveling to Las Vegas. (Some clubs allow bookings far in advance, and others do not.) This is also a good time to ask about club rentals. Knowing the cost and other terms of the rental may persuade a traveler to change his or her mind about taking clubs along or leaving them at home. When making a reservation, ask if any greens, fairways or tee boxes are being re-conditioned or re-surfaced. The rigors of the Las Vegas climate create this maintenance need with some frequency, and all courses do need to set up provisional greens on certain holes from time to time.

A day or two before the tee time, call to confirm the real, effective travel time to the course. This will vary not only with location, but also time of day and week. Add an extra half hour to be sure to be on time. Add even more time, up to an hour and a half if necessary, to permit time for club rental, use of the driving range or putting practice.

Clubs usually can be rented at the courses, as they are aware that most of their players come from out of town. This will surely entail both extra time and money.

Most upper level courses require players to use the short, soft, plastic spikes (or none at all) to protect the greens. Players are usually required to use golf carts, to maintain the pace of play. Some require (and, of course, supply) caddies. Most private and daily fee courses require players to wear a shirt with a collar. No short shorts, cutoffs or jeans are allowed.

Transportation is often arranged by the resort concierge. If a player does not have a car and decides to arrange the transportation for himself (or herself), it is essential to pay attention to the distances and costs involved.

Finally, in the hot, dry climate of Las Vegas (which is, after all in the Mojave Desert!), it is really important to keep oneself hydrated when spending long hours outdoors, in the sun. The courses all can supply water, but having an emergency supply in the bag is always a good idea.

The Course Ratings provided here are according to the USGA Course Rating criteria. The course rating is the number of strokes the average scratch golfer would take to complete the round, as determined by a certification team other than the course management itself. The slope rating compares the difficulty of the course for a bogey golfer and a scratch golfer, and is self-reported. The number is between 55 and 155. The lower the slope rating, the less is the differential between the bogey golfer and the scratch golfer. This will signify that it is either very easy or very hard for everyone! Each set of tee boxes has its own rating. Those given here are for the farthest set. Also, the yardage given is the maximum yardage, from the back tees. There may be anywhere from three to six sets of tee boxes on any given course. The dollar figure is the highest fee charged for an 18-hole round on a Saturday morning in the summer of 2007.
