Las Vegas Golf Club
Something old, something new. They stopped short of something borrowed with the recent $5 million course overhaul at the oldest golf club in North Las Vegas Valley. It might well have had an upgrade, yet the traditional links course continues a legacy that has been loved by locals for over 60 years – an unpretentious, casual club where golf remains the only thing on the sporting menu.
Designed by William P. Bell in 1938, Las Vegas Golf Club charms each and every guest who opts for a leisurely game upon it's sophisticated layout. Gentle undulations and fast fairways keep the game edgy and exciting, yet the traditional links layout is a reminder of how golf used to be – a gentleman's pastime. The Bell father-son partnership are accredited with some of the most stunning traditional layouts in the United States, notably the Bel Air and Los Angeles Country Clubs. Despite their accomplishments, the Bro Golf Club of St. Andrews (comprising many fans, admirers and former friends) maintains they were one of the most “unappreciated golf design teams in history.” Casey O' Callaghan, the contemporary architect employed to revive the grandeur of Las Vegas Golf Club has pulled off the renovations with remarkable sympathy to the original layout, retaining the character of L.V.G.C that has been loved by generations.
Nestled upon the sophisticated West Washington Avenue at the heart of North Las Vegas, L.V.G.C enjoys a convenient proximity to Sin City's most visited attractions. Fremont Street Experience and Las Vegas Premium Outlets mall lie just under 10 minutes East. Hotels abound in North Las Vegas run the scale of star-class, although many of the Holiday Inns and Motel franchises now boast amenities on a par with the super-resorts.
Take the test of endurance and stamina, upon a course designed to be friendly, yet deceptive. Over 30 bunkers litter the manicured grounds – some of which flank the greens almost entirely. At 503 yards, the par-5 dogleg second hole is the longest on the circuit. It is possible to make it in two, providing you plan your attack around the trees. The fairway on the par-5 13th is ambitious, yet narrow, requiring precision for the 431-yard stretch and bunker flanked, low-lying green. With it's arch-lined sun terrace and sophisticated setting, the L.V.G.C clubhouse is the perfect place to unwind post play, offering a distinguished vintage lounge bar, restaurant and golf shop among it's few amenities. But then Las Vegas Golf Club doesn't need the frills that typify resort clubs, because it's heart remains as true to golf, as it did 60 years ago!
