Did you know that nineteen of the top twenty five biggest hotels in the entire world are not only located in Las Vegas, but in the 3.8 mile stretch that makes up the Vegas Strip? It’s a fact. With over 67,000 luxury rooms to reserve, this is ground zero.
In 1941, the first hotel opened for business on the Las Vegas Strip. The El Rancho Vegas boasted 63 rooms. Modest by today’s standards, but this little hotel was the spark that ignited over half a century of non-stop development that has given this city not only one of the world’s most spectacular skylines, but the highest concentration of luxury hotel room accommodations anywhere.
In 1942, the Strip’s second hotel, the Last Frontier, debuted. But, it was in 1946 that things changed forever with the opening of the perennial Flamingo. The Flamingo isn’t just any hotel, the “pink hotel” as it’s known has become an icon. With its Miami Beach theme and gangster past, the Flamingo has grown up to become the world’s 11th largest hotel boasting 3,565 rooms and set the standard for Vegas’ theme hotel future.
As the era of gangsters gave way to the era of big business, Bugsy Siegel faded into the past as moguls like Kirk Kerkorian and Steve Wynn became the fathers of the new Las Vegas. With loads of cash and still more business savvy, modern Vegas hoteliers demolished old Las Vegas (often quite literally) to make way for the new.
Starting in the 1960s, a succession of the worlds biggest and best resorts began to appear on the Vegas landscape from the groundbreaking, International Hotel in 1969 which, with its 1,512 rooms was then the world’s largest, to first incarnation of the MGM Grand (today called Bally’s), to the The Mirage, which in 1989 set the bar as the most expensive hotel in history.
And don’t expect things to slow down. In 2005, Vegas set another record with the opening of the $2.7 billion Wynn hotel.
