Microgaming
Microgaming Software Systems Ltd., together with Cryptologic, opened the frontier of online gaming. In 1994, Microgaming invented and introduced a sports book to the Internet. Today, more than 100 of the most reputable online gaming sites use the Microgaming software platform including those that regularly receive recognitions as the best web sites around. Microgaming is also the largest provider in terms of the number of games and variations offered. Its headquarters are on the Isle of Man.
Early on in the development of the online gaming industry, Microgaming came to understand that there had to be much more to software than speed, functionality and a realistic graphical user interface. Microgaming understood how consumer confidence in the software could boost user trust of the web site, and by the same token, how a crooked or poorly run site could damage the reputation of the software that ran it. This company is recognized as the industry leader in trying to create standards of design and practice, industry associations, and other collaborative efforts to improve the quality of the online product for the ultimate customers. It was a founding member of eCOGRA (a player protection organization) and of the Interactive Gaming Council (a trade association with a lobbying arm). Microgaming has advised regulators, including the United Kingdom's Gambling Commission, concerning appropriate procedures and policies for keeping the industry clear of dishonest and unreliable businesses.
Microgaming, together with Derivco, its South Aftican affiliate, has developed a full set of table games for casinos, with variations, as well as the full complement of poker, bingo, keno and sports (and race) book options.
Microgaming is thought of as being stronger than its competitors in the area of slot machines and video poker machines, though it fully meets the competition in all the other categories. The company has also innovated a number of new games, known only to the Internet. The complete offering is now well over 300 games. As an example of the variety, Microgaming's blackjack offerings include separate options for multi-player or just one-on-one play, single, double or multiple decks, and rules variations concerning dealer hits on soft 17, double down, surrender, ties with the dealer, and payoffs for a natural.
Progressive slot and video poker jackpots are available at many casino web sites, which link several licensee establishments. Microgaming licensees have paid well over $200 million in progressive jackpots over the years. The Mega Moolah is perhaps the most popular, starting off at $1 million.
Real time poker is available across licensees through Microgaming Poker (formerly Prima Poker). Hands history and player chat functions are part of the software.
Of the innovative games, Microgaming owns several video games and characters, such as "Tomb Raider" (Lara Croft), and "Hitman." These are often displayed in the form of movie-like slot machines with a story line.
Microgaming software affords the player password-protected access to his or her funds transaction history (CashCheck) and playing history (PlayCheck).
