Net Entertainment was founded in 1996 in Sweden by a leading brick-and-mortar casino operator. It is recognized as an industry innovator in browser based software for online gaming. Originally the company planned to be an online casino operator, but first had to devise the software to run it. Its first casino came online in 2000, followed by four more. Then, in 2002, Net Entertainment released a "casino module" for use by others, and then sportsbook software followed. Early in 2005 the company divested its casino properties to concentrate on software development and licensing. Its shares are publicly traded on the Nordic Growth Equity market (NGM Equity).

Net Entertainment's software has been tested and accredited for randomness by two independent testing facilities. Account management services are also made available to licensees. Multiple player options and multiple language interfaces are strengths of the software platforms.
