Pachinko
Pachinko is a mechanical Japanese game with a good bit in common with pinball, except that it is vertical, rather than horizontal, and there are no flippers. Many small balls are in play at one time. The player can control the initial speed of a ball, but thereafter, its travel through a maze of pins is subject to random variation (or should be, at least). If the ball triggers a bonus, more balls are released to the player. If not, the ball falls down into the bottom of the machine and is out of play. Like pinball, pachinko has evolved from mechanical to electro-mechanical to purely electronic. Pachinko games can be found online as well as in many casinos, especially in Asia. In Japan, it is common to come across “pachinko parlors,” which specialize in offering just this game. Japan and Taiwan outlaw gambling for money, so the prizes are tokens that can then be “sold” to an apparently unrelated business for money, which represents winnings at the machines. As in all places where gambling is outlawed, organized crime has come in to fill the void.
