Scotty Nguyen
Thuan "Scotty" Nguyen was born in Vietnam in 1962. He was a protegé of Men “The Master” Nguyen (no relation). Since the late 1990’s he has been very active in professional tournaments. In five years between 2000 and 2004 he won prize money in over 100 events. He won the WSOP Main Event in 1998. His 1997 and 2001 wins (three of them) were in Omaha games. Nguyen enjoys laughing and is an affable member of the circuit. At the table, however, he has a very competitive nature. Scotty’s trademark gesture is that he adds “baby” or “yeah, baby” at the end of almost every sentence. Famously, he said it in 1998 at the final table in the WSOP main event. The board showed 9-9-8-8-8. After making a massive bet, Scotty said to his opponent, Kevin McBride, “You call, gonna be all over, baby!” And it was. McBride thought they would split the pot with the same full house, but Nguyen had a 9 in the pocket, making his full house a winner. In 2006 Scotty won his first WPT event in the Fourth Season Gold Strike World Poker Open against Michael Mizrachi. In 2007 he was second behind Eli Elezra in the WSOP event for Seven Card Stud Hi Lo Split Eights or Better and 11th in the Main Event. His total winnings as of 2007 are more than $7.5 million.
