Carrot Top
Carrot Top has left an irremovable orange tinge on comedy history. Over the years, his prop-inspired comedy act has only gotten more extreme and more spot-on with their social commentary and cultural mockery.
You’ll know Carrot Top has arrived on stage when you’re nearly blinded by every color of the rainbow on his frenzied, unpredictable stage complete with lasers, wild lights and even wilder music.
Carrot Top acts like a tortured inventor turned door to door salesman with a suitcase full of hilarious props like inhalers attached to party horns and a hitchhiker jacket with an arm sticking out, allowing hitchhikers to keep warm while the fake arm flashes motorists a thumbs up.
He also uses comical objects he encounters in day-to-day life, like a sign that says, “Ask a flight attendant for help if you cannot read.”
Comedians often use props in their shows, but Carrot Top is the master craftsman behind his own props making his show forever fresh. Few other comedians can visually convey concepts they way Carrot Top does.
His show moves at a rapid pace, with no real organization, flow or reason. He throws out one prop after another with his lighting fast commentary, like he’s auctioning off ice cubes in 100-degree heat.
Carrot Top can make even the most cynical audience members laugh. Many come just to see what kinds of props he’ll come up with next. To be sure, they’re all very clever. There’s something enjoyable about seeing such ingenuity, especially when it’s doused with comedy.
You can blame Jonathan Winters, Robin Williams, Garry Shandling and, of course, George Carlin for producing this master of prop comedy. In fact, Carrot Top says that he wants to be like Garry Shandling when he grows up.
Carrot Top learned his sense of humor and mechanical creativity from his dad, a NASA scientist and closet comedian who constantly cracked jokes, but it was Carrot Top’s college roommate pushed him into open mike night. Of course, he was a big hit. One of his first gags was a neighborhood crime watch sign. He said “it takes 20 seconds to break into a house, but it took me over an hour to unbolt this sign.”
Despite his huge success as one of the most popular American comedians, Carrot Top struggled to break into a comedy stand-up industry that rarely thinks outside the box. He kept himself going by poking fun at himself, a habit that continues to this day.
His humor is also heavily culturally specific as if he had a master’s degree in U.S. pop-gossip so those from other countries might not get a lot of the jokes. You sure won’t see any shying away from the latest political scandals and celebrity events.
While the comedy’s enough to sell the show, you’ll also get drink service at his 90 minute Vegas shows. His shows sell out rapidly, so you’ll probably need to get tickets many days in advance but he doesn’t look like he’s leaving Vegas any time soon. You’ll find him in the Atrium Showroom, amid some of the best dining and shopping in the Luxor.
Be warned, Carrot Top’s show is not for kids. He throws out plenty of props that are bordering on the X-rated, so be forewarned. You must 18 or older - though grown up kids are allowed.
