Four Queens L.A. Comedy Club
The bright lights and bustling casino bars of Vegas' infamous 'Strip' may try to emphasize the best Sin City has to offer, but even Nevada's most visited locale hides some venerable old gems, that undoubtedly rival the up-town glitz. The “Canyon Club” at the Four Queens Hotel and Casino Resort is one such gem. Situated within the downtown “Glitter Gulch”/ Fremont Street quarter; the recently renovated “Canyon Club” represents a venue that has defied the tests of time, and competition.
Revamped with a rustic oak interior, comfortable sofas and simple wooden tables strategically placed around the video-screen flanked stage; the “Canyon Club” feels more like a spacious living room than a popular rock and comedy venue. The addition of a brand spanking new sound system, digital lighting and a few quirky coffee tables all add to the home-from-home appeal, yet with the promise of high tech visual and sound entertainment. The “Canyon” plays host to a diverse range of live performances, including rock nights, which have drawn the likes of the B-52's and Chad Kroeger to the well-trod stage – however, it is the move of Vegas favorite: the “L.A Comedy Club”which lures both locals and tourists, to the intimate lair of entertainment.
The “Four Queens L.A Comedy Club” has maintained a prominent presence on the diverse list of Vegas comedy shows, not least due to the repute of it's production duo. Matt Chevez and Joaquin Trujillo form the driving force behind the “Four Queens L.A Comedy Club” success; a partnership whose selective choices, and comedic values have shaped the exclusive nature of the show. The former “Maxim” colleagues went into partnership over seven years ago, and between them boast several successful productions. Such was the response to the opening of the “Four Queens” in 2008, that Chevez and Trujillo were invited to open a similar show at the iconic Hard Rock Hotel and Casino!
Originally located within the intimate Trader Vic's Showroom at Miracle Mile, the “L.A Comedy Club” earned a string of accolades for it's commitment to the provision of superior comedy entertainment. Awarded the “Best Comedy Club of Vegas 2009” in accordance with the Las Vegas Review Journal's reader's poll, the production consistently receives acclaim for ranking among the top five Vegas shows of it's genre. Such success should come as little surprise, given the fastidious approach to choosing the 'right' acts for the show. Chevez and Trujillo combine road-tested old favorites such as Felipe Esparza of “Last Comic Standing” fame, with relative newbies to the circuit – the likes of Joey Medina and Willie Ferrel, whom have now become sell-out performers in their own right. Intent on exemplifying the talent of relative unknowns, the unique production has acted as a springboard for many comedy acts, however also lures the big names in comedy, whom appreciate the simple concept and audience-friendly venue.
In terms of show structure, the “Four Queens Comedy Club” is one of few to appear unrehearsed. While the acts may appear within a preconceived running order; the format of each act is relatively freestyle or “improv”. Both Chevez and Trujillo host the production, opening with clips of their 'act's' previous showcases at other venues – a motive designed to enhance the already relaxed, 'living room' atmosphere of the venue. “Four Queens” stipulates an over-21 age limit, mainly due to the unpredictable nature of some acts, but then again, the venue itself is dedicated to the provision of adult entertainment - so this is purely precaution for any explicit material that might be used.
As a general rule, the “Four Queens” operates from a 9pm schedule, and offers ninety minutes, to two hours of diverse comedy entertainment. The venue offers an affordable show, within comfortable surroundings and a sophisticated line-up – further promoted with the promise of an all-inclusive bar to boot. For a downtown comedy club competing with the headliners on the 'Strip', the “Four Queens Comedy Club” truly goes out of it's way to give you an evening to rival the majority of the competition.
