Greg London Impressions That Rock
All that glitters may not be gold – but it could be the jacket of Barry Manilow impersonator Greg London, currently thrilling guests with his one-man revue at the Shimmer Cabaret Theater, Las Vegas Hilton. With a repertoire of over fifty impressions, there's never a dull moment in the company of London – the man who can don “Kermit”, just as quickly as he can hit the high notes of the Bee Gee's “Stayin' Alive”! Packing over 30 imitations into his revolving “Impressions That ROCK” showcase, a night with London is akin to spending the evening with the stars that draw his inspiration – only their live, loud and all under one roof!
Backed by a profoundly talented live 8-piece, Greg London swings from pop and hip hop, to the raucous rock of Ozzy Osbourne, in a show that can only be described as frenetic. Who else would dare to segue Arnold Schwarzenegger with an impromptu Michael Jackson number, and throw in a 30-second costume change to top it off? Las Vegas bears a multitude of tribute and impersonation reviews, yet few muster the energy and vivacity to keep an audience stunned for 70 minutes, while weaving in a couple of ironic “struggling musician” vignettes.
Greg London is no newbie on the Neon City circuit. In fact, he's barely traveled more than fifty feet across the Paradise Road since he launched “Impressions That ROCK” in 2007. Originally the headliner at the star-studded Riviera Hotel, London moved his show of many faces across the Strip in 2010 – a move which prompted a subtle show makeover and the employment of a few more Britney-doubles to boot. Prior to his sensational Vegas landing, London was courting the guests at Harrah's Reno, while forging his own career as a soloist and scooping prestigious awards, such as Spotlight's “Entertainer Of The Year” in 2001. Since 2009, Greg London has hit the big time as a solo star – his self-penned pop attempts “Cool Change” and “Everything I Own” both reaching the top 20 of USA Today's Airplay Charts.
From the dip-down lights to a state of the art high definition amp system, the set-up within the Shimmer Cabaret bears all the hallmarks of a rock concert (although once London springs to life on stage, this has variety written all over it). A trio of busty, bustier-clad dancers provides a more than ample accompaniment of sexy, to a show that would otherwise rest with all eyes on Greg London. That's no negative, considering his exhaustive wardrobe. From the rhinestone one-piece suits of Elvis, to the unconservative belted mini-skirts synonymous with Amy Winehouse, it's hard to believe this is the same guy, as he chops and changes chameleon style throughout. London embraces “Rehab” with the lazy lipstick raunch and slight tipple-induced sway, confirming this is indeed his take on Winehouse, while the pelvic thrust of his two minute Elvis medley surpasses even “Legends in Concert” quality. Somewhere in between, he manages to slot in Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson – the latter being exemplary of his love for soul.
Sin City show regulars might well have seen impressionism done to the death, yet even they affirm Greg London to surpass expectation. With more than 30 meaty “acts” to tuck into, “Impressions That Rock” has no time to stall, and keeps the audience on it's toes with a few strategically introduced stand-up slots, and a plenitude of parodies. Fast paced and funny, Greg London's revue is proving to be a major player among Sin City's highest rollers and showing no signs of slowing down!
