Sin City Comedy Show
“V Theater” may proclaim to entertain, with one of the leading stand up comedy shows in Las Vegas, however during certain scenarios 'sit-down' will be compulsory. You see, unlike the plethora of comedy revues in Vegas, the “Sin City Comedy Show” combines the fundamentals that have defined Strip entertainment for over 50 years – comedy and showgirls. The “Sin City Dollz” are the glamorous shake-up that sets this revue apart from it's contemporaries – many with gymnastic talent that would rival a Cirque trapeze artist, and put your average lap dancing club out of business.
Despite the presence of flesh-baring beauties, “Sin City Comedy Show” doesn't conform to the smutty topless revue, that some comedy shows have evolved into – usually those lacking in a continuous flow of original material. With an Emmy Award already under his belt, comedy director John Padon has a pretty good idea of what works, and what doesn't. Segment director for Donald R. Beck's “Spring Break 24/7” movie release in 2007, his comedy offerings are often likened to the National Lampoon style: basically combining sex and comedy, in a spoof-like and usually innocuous manner. Kevin Kearney, the former National Booking Manager for “Catch A Rising Star” agency, completes the production team, bringing over twenty years of creative vision and business acumen to the mix. The result? “Sin City Comedy Show”; a concept that as of yet, has not been flogged like a dead horse in Vegas!
Housed within a 200-capacity studio annexe of the “V Theater”; the “Sin City Comedy Show” enjoys the kind of intimate venue befitting of it's classic Vegas style. Walled hollows either side of the theater replicate the old booths synonymous with old theater design, while rows of simple chaired tables contribute to a relaxed ambiance – providing plenty of space for those “Sin City Dollz” to wander among the audience, seeking out their prey.
Padon commences proceedings with a part-video, part acted bit involving “City Doll” Brandy Lee (dressed as a secretary), who with the aid of a desk and swivel chair, proceeds to enact key elements of the 'story' being told. Sexy and seductive, it's a wonder anyone in the audience manages to grasp a word of Padon's monologue, as Brandy stops short of leaving little to the imagination. Incidentally, none of the dancers ever get to the extent of being topless – one of the reason's this show prides itself on being “different” to the rest!
Of course, with over 90 minutes of show-time to fill, you can't expect the dancers to fill too many gaps (although many a gentleman patron would happily disagree) which is where John Padon and Kevin Kearney continue to pull out the stops. Rather than featuring themselves for the entirety of the show, they rope in some old hands and 'black book' contacts, to give the show a little variety. Previous guest comedians have included the likes of Dennis Blair and Bryan Brunner, who both reworked some of their key material to fit with the theme of the show. Brunner has since become a familiar face to “Sin City Comedy's” patrons; a returning headliner whose ability to transform even a mundane pop song, into a ditty relative to sex causes laughter of the side-splitting variety.
With a rotational schedule, and fresh talent featured on an almost nightly basis – the “Sin City Comedy Show” manages to keep it's allure with an ever-evolving range of headlining acts. Most are household names, having been featured on Comedy Central, with recent appearances from J. Reid and Robert Deuchaine – but like most comedy variety shows, there's always the unexpected filler, who proves to take the show to a whole new level of hilarious. Gentlemen wishing to enter the lottery for a lap-dance, are advised to position themselves as close to the stage as feasibly possible – although it may be an idea to leave the wife at home!
