The history of the Las Vegas Valley can be told by the history of the springs that contributed to the name of Las Vegas and its popularity in the middle of the Mojave Desert for so many years. The Springs Preserve is a tract of 160 acres with exhibitions, tours and other attractions, dedicated to an understanding of the ecosystem that the valley once was, and to the preservation of what remains. It is at the location that traditionally is the “birthplace” of Las Vegas, where the first European-origin travelers came, looking for water.
The “Origen” exhibit recounts the history and culture of the valley. There are more than 75 exhibits and an indoor theater for special presentations. The history starts essentially with the end of the last ice age, approximately 12,000 years ago and continues through the incur-sions of European-origin visitors, the exit of native peoples, and the abuse of the ecology first for agriculture, then for mining, and then for recreational development. Trails through-out the property provide for a pleasant walk and informative lessons. Hours are 10 to 10. Sometimes concerts are presented at the preserve, causing an early closing. The trails close at dark.
To arrive at the Preserve, take I-15 north to US 95 north, to the Valley View Boulevard Exit. Go south to Meadows Lane and turn left.
