Summerlin is a suburb of Las Vegas and a planned community built by Howard Hughes’ corporation. The place is named after his grandmother, Jean Amelia Summerlin. It is on the western rim of the Las Vegas Valley to the west of Las Vegas near the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. It covers 23,400 acres and has a population of approximately 85,000. Howard Hughes acquired the land in the mid-1950's. The southern portion of the town was added through land exchanges with the federal government. The late Hughes' Summa Corporation began construction of Summerlin in 1990. The northern part, above Charleston Boulevard, is part of Las Vegas, and the southern portion is in Clark County. It is comprised of several different private unit developments, called villages, regulated by owners associations. This exclusive, upscale community has many outdoor recreational facilities, parks both large and small, bike paths and walking trails. There are 9 golf courses in Summerlin. It is also the home to the C.W. Marriot resort.
